So what if lacrosse isn’t recognized as a state-wide sport. When it reaches such status, all indications are that Barron Collier will be setting the standard for area teams to follow.

Members of the Immokalee High boys and girls track stood on the bleachers at Naples High on Saturday chanting in unison as if the Indians had just won the 43rd annual Eagle Invitational. Moments later, the news came over the loudspeaker, confirming what Immokalee suspected.

Lely’s Evan Taylor didn’t panic when he missed his first shot in the “King of the Hill” 3-point shootout at The Lakeland Center on Saturday.

The 5-foot-9 senior guard entered a zone afterward, calmly knocking down 11 of 15 shots to earn the Florida High School Athletic Association’s first 3-point shootout championship.
Minutes before Friday’s Class 4A 3-point Shootout Championship at The Lakeland Center, Lely’s Evan Taylor said he sat on the bench with a feeling of anxiety. But the 5-foot-9 senior guard didn’t show any signs of it, as he scored 10 points to win and move on to tonight’s King of the Hill 3-point Shootout against champions from the other five classifications.

The Gulf Coast High School baseball team won’t be making a repeat performance of their 23-0 undefeated season from a year ago, though they are off to a decent start given their circumstances. Through their first four games, the Sharks are 3-1 and in the process pulling back together a team that tore through last season without a blemish. The challenge this season for head coach, Jeff Rosa, is finding the players that fill the void left by the seven graduated seniors from last year’s team.

The biggest shoes to fill belong to a pitching staff that saw four big arms leave. “We have a full staff,” Rosa said. “The problem is that none of my arms have any varsity experience.

Jennifer Bledsoe’s Lely softball team managed to turn some heads in the area last year, as the team managed a 14-9 finish, and made it all the way to a regional matchup before having their season ended by Riverdale. This year, with the majority of their players returning, the Trojans seem to be in position for getting back to, if not surpassing where they finished one season ago. “I think the girls are very realistic, and want to build on their past successes while moving forward,” Bledsoe said.

It is what every coach dreams of - a young team with experience in state competition. The Golden Gate Titan girls track team, with ten of their twelve state qualifiers from last year returning, captured first place in each of the relays in the Golden Gate Titan Showcase Feb. 22, a pre-season competition for the district, leading the way for a day of Titan victories.

The Titan girls finished first overall among seven teams. The boys team, also demonstrated speed and agility, placing second behind Immokalee. The Palmetto Ridge Bears girls team finished third behind Immokalee with 83 points and the boys took fifth.
