Cheerleaders from Valley High School and Valley Southwoods Freshman High School spent Saturday teaching spirited young Tigers' fans how to rile up a crowd. Kids in kindergarten through fifth grade learned to cheer and dance during a clinic at Westridge Elementary School in West Des Moines. The clinic is an important fundraiser for the Valley cheerleading program, which must raise nearly $12,000 each year to pay for busing and uniforms.

"It's also really a great experience for the older girls to help to teach the younger girls and realize that they are role models," said Beth Aanonson, head cheerleading coach at Valley. The clinic began at 8:30 a.m.

, and by 11:30 the elementary students had learned a dance routine and several cheers. When all 192 elementary-aged girls and 70 high school girls cheered in unison, the result was ear-piercingly spirited. "It was a great success," Aanonson said of the event.

"I think my girls and the little girls had a good time." The girls will perform their cheers at halftime of the sophomore football game today at Valley Stadium. Halftime usually begins shortly after 6 p.
