Historian David Starkey said he was "90 percent certain" he identified the first portrait of Jane Grey who was queen for nine days before being beheaded at the Tower of London, the Daily Telegraph said. The portrait with the unnamed subject dates from the mid-16th century. Starkey said he identified her as Grey from a brooch on her dress and a spray of foliage behind it that links her to the king.

Starkey said the brooch in the miniature matched one in an inventory of Grey's possessions at the British Library. He deduced the foliage behind the brooch was a symbol for the Dudley family, into which Grey was married. John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, essentially ruled England in the last days of Edward VI, whose death propelled Jane to the throne.
