Hartwell, Ga. Clothing gave the first clues to the identity of a pedestrian hit by a tractor-trailer truck about 11:45 p.m.
Thursday.
Hart County Sheriff Mike Cleveland said Vickie Shiflet, 57, of Hartwell was last seen Thursday night at the Cateechee Golf Club on Ga. 77 wearing a fur coat, clothing and jewelry that was found on the victim’s body.
Late Friday, Hart County Coroner Mike Adams confirmed Ms. Shiflet as the victim.
“(She died) from multi-system blunt force trauma,” he said.
Sheriff Cleveland said, based on interviews with people at the Cateechee clubhouse, “She was there with friends, got tired of waiting and walked up the road.”
She left the club alone and on foot, he said. Her actions in the next minutes are not known.
A driver of a Columbia Farms chicken-feed truck said he crested a hill and slammed on his brakes when he encountered what was “like a shape in the road,” Sheriff Cleveland said. “Before he hit her, she raised up and was hit and drug down the road.”
Mrs.
Shiflet, who is divorced, retired a month ago from the Hart Emergency Medical Services, Sheriff Cleveland said. She did not come home Thursday night. A preliminary identification was made about noon Friday, he said.
A spokesman for the Georgia State Patrol deferred comment, saying the trooper’s report was not complete.
Sheriff Cleveland said a resident on Ga. 77 pulled into his driveway moments before the accident, saying he had seen what he thought was “a big dog on its hands and knees.
”
It is not known if the pedestrian was already injured when the truck hit her, the sheriff said. Mr. Adams said an autopsy, including toxicology, would be performed.
The feed truck driver was not charged, Sheriff Cleveland said.
