"We think that the girls actually surprised him," Rand said. The 8 a.m.
burglary on Margaret Drive was one of two crimes in Suffolk County Tuesday in which armed men forced their way into occupied homes and stole jewelry after they couldn't find any cash. The burglar in the Coram incident entered the home by throwing a rock at a rear sliding glass door, police said. Rand said that during part of the burglary the suspect displayed what looked like a handgun.
Rand would not say whether it was ever pointed at the girls, who were not physically harmed. It was the second time the home has been burglarized since January, Rand said. The intruder wore a black zippered hooded sweatshirt and jeans with the letter "M" on the right leg, police said.
Six hours later in East Patchogue, two men knocked on the door of a home on Haig Avenue, police said. They asked for someone who lived at the home; the woman who answered the door said the individual was not there, police said. As she was trying to close her door, they forced their way in, Det.
Sgt. Daniel Molloy said. They then demanded again to see the man, who police said is a friend of the victim.
When she repeated that he wasn't there, one of the men held her at gunpoint while the other went about ransacking her house -- pulling out drawers and flipping through clothes. The intruders left with a bracelet, necklace and a ring. Molloy said that they have since spoken with the individual the burglars were looking for; he claims to not know who could have been asking for him.
The woman told police she didn't recognize them. Neither burglary is considered part of a larger pattern, and police do not believe they are related at this time.
