Candles were lit, ribbons, flowers and pins were handed out and pictures were snapped Feb. 8 to honor students at Roosevelt Middle School. Of the 457 students at RMS, 171 or 37 percent were inducted into the Roosevelt honor society for earning a grade-point average of 3.

5 or higher last semester. Sammie Schick, an RMS teacher who created the honor society 18 years ago and has coordinated the event since then, said the event allows the school and parents to recognize the hard work of the children. "About four years ago we really started noticing an increase," Schick said.

The first time RMS hosted the special night 18 years ago, Schick said, she printed only 25 programs for attendees. She was awe-struck when 500 people showed up. "I stood there .

.. thinking, 'I can't believe this,' '' Schick said.

The event has been a huge success ever since. Schick said students consider the honor society to be important and work hard to be included. "I think that's why we're so high at 37 percent," she said.

The ceremony Feb. 8 cost around $600 to put together, Schick said. "I want the community to know we love our kids," she said.
