the glitterati at Elizabeth Hurley's wedding was one very perceptive observer: Rosemary Trollope, mother of bestselling novelist Joanna Trollope and friend of the bride's mother. Her Versace dress had a very simple top, while feathers, clouds and clouds of them.

Later, when I was talking to Elizabeth and was able to pick up a fold of her dress and feel it, I found the feathers were in fact rows and rows of closely packed, finely pleated, chiffon frills. parents of the very junior bridal retinue (all bar Elizabeth's niece and nephew, Amelia and Miles, seemed to be between the ages of three and five). Her son Damian, as train-bearer, held one layer of her long veil high in the air and it was caught on her head by a very simple band of diamonds serving as a tiara.

Following behind them were all the children, who behaved perfectly. The boys wore beautifully cut white jackets with cream, satin edges that caught the light, as did their white patent shoes, and the little girls wore full-length dresses with fitted bodices and fluffy skirts and carried lime-green bouquets. The chapel at Sudeley Castle is not large, though very beautiful and was made more so by creamy white roses.

Their blooms and glossy green leaves outlined the chancel arch in long columns.
