It was only fitting that the intracity high school wrestling dual meet between Case and Park would come down to the last seconds of the last match.

Park's Jeremy Jurkiewicz took down Brandon Swiecichowski in the final seconds of their 171-pound match for a 9-8 victory to ensure the Panthers' 30-24 Southeast Conference victory at Park.

With the meet score 27-24, a Case decision would have tied the meet and a major decision, technical fall or pin would have given the Eagles the victory.

Swiecichowski led 6-3 entering the final period, but Jurkiewicz took him down, let him go, took him down again and let him go again, leaving Swiecichowski with an 8-7 lead to set up the key moment of the match.

Park took the lead by winning five matches in a six-match stretch, starting with Dominic Morelli's 25-second pin of Kody Torres at 112 pounds. Panthers coach Tom Adams also singled out freshman Kevin Evenson's 9-7 decision over Peter Vakos at 125.

Evenson came back from a 7-4 deficit with a three-point and a two-point near fall in the final period.

The only Case victory in that stretch was by Ray Pugh at 130, a 3-1 decision over Kadeem Lowe. Kris Magruder improved to 13-1 with a pin in 2:19 of John Foster at 145 and Andy Stark pinned Andrew Fix in 1:31 for the Eagles.

Eight of the 14 matches were decided three points or less and each team had two pins. Javier Dumas at 152 had the other pin for Park.

"They kept coming back strong," Adams said of Case.

"They kept fighting - it was a close intracity matchup and a lot (of fans) showed up to watch."

Eagles coach Mark Petersen had one match of note on his mind. His son, Brian, was wrestling for Park and lost a 3-0 decision to Kyle Cipov.

Boys' basketball ST. CATHERINE'S 51, BADGER 41: Rebounding from their first loss in 50 games, the Angels watched a 14-point halftime lead get cut to eight points after three quarters, but held on and beat Lake Geneva Badger in a Lakeshore Conference game in the John F. McGuire Gymnasium at St.

Catherine's.

"We're just out of sync offensively," said St. Catherine's coach Bob Letsch, whose team lost 59-56 to Milwaukee Bay View last Friday to snap a 49-game winning streak.

"We're not setting good picks. We're not working the ball like we want to."

James Haarsma scored eight of the Angels' first 11 points of the game as St.

Catherine's (4-1, 3-0 Lakeshore) took a 29-15 halftime lead. Haarsma scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. LaQuan Fenderson scored five of his eight points in the second quarter.

But Badger (2-4, 0-4 Lakeshore) came back in the third quarter, outscoring St. Catherine's 15-9 to pull within 38-30. Alex Chironis led the way for Badger with eight points that quarter, including one of the Badgers' two 3-pointers that quarter.

"I have to give the other teams credit," Letsch said.

"They're playing good defense on us."

Letsch admitted his team, ranked fifth in Division 3 in the latest Associated Press state poll, isn't shooting well, either.

"We're shooting 42 percent for the year," Letsch said. "That's not very good. We've got to work on that.

"

The Angels did bounce back in the fourth quarter, outscoring Badger 13-11, with Haarsma going 4-for-4 at the free-throw line and Fenderson going 3-for-4.

Patrick Souter finished with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds for the Angels.

BURLINGTON 56, WATERFORD 54 (OT): Chris Weiger scored three of his seven points in overtime as Burlington won a nonconference game at Waterford.

J.J. Wiemer scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter as the Demons rallied from a 40-33 deficit to force overtime.

Jake Guziewski had 15 points and Yunus Erkin added 10 for Burlington. It was the second straight overtime game for the Demons, who lost to Franklin in double overtime Tuesday night.

UNION GROVE 70, WILMOT 55: Craig McClelland and Kellon Whitley sparked a third-quarter surge as Union Grove defeated Wilmot in a Lakeshore Conference game at Wilmot.

McClelland had 18 points and 12 rebounds and Whitley added 17 points for the Broncos (6-0, 4-0 Lakeshore).

Union Grove led 34-30 at halftime before breaking the game open in the third quarter.

Whitley scored eight points and the Broncos got five points each from McClelland and Ricky Weina to take a double-digit lead.

"Our defense tightened and we started to control the glass," Union Grove coach Dave Pettit said. "We got into our transition game and it started to flow.

"

Michael O'Brien scored 15 points and Weina added nine.

Brandon Perry led Wilmot (3-4, 1-2 Lakeshore) with 15 points.

BRADLEY TECH 85, PARK 62: The Panthers missed a chance late in the first half to stay close to the fourth-ranked (Division 1, Associated Press state poll) Trojans and lost a nonconference game at Milwaukee, Park's first loss of the season.

The Panthers (5-1) cut the lead to six points at 31-25 with about three minutes left in the first half, but couldn't score on their next three possessions. Bradley Tech (4-0) made two 3-point baskets and another basket to finish the half with an 8-0 run and a 39-25 lead.

Park had more chances in the second half, but missed six layups to start the third quarter.

"We missed something like 14 layups in the game and against a team like Tech, you can't do that," Panthers coach Jim Betker said.

Betker said he will use the game as a learning tool.

"The kids played hard," Betker said.

"It's good for us to see where we're at. (Bradley Tech) is a quality team, but I thought our kids played with a lot of heart. The bottom line is we have to put it in the hoop.

"

Damonshay Pitt led Park with 16 points and Melvin Claybrook had 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Anthony Hill, who has made an oral commitment to play for UW-Milwaukee next season, led the Trojans with 22 points.

UNION GROVE CHRISTIAN 75, GRACE CHRISTIAN 55: Despite showing symptoms of the flu, Brock Betz had a career-high 31 points and teammate Jacob Sallee added 16 points to offset a 42-point performance by Grace Christian's Marshall Adams and help the Cougars win an Indian Trails Conference game at Union Grove.

Betz had 28 of his points in the first half, when Union Grove Christian (4-2, 4-1 ITC) took a 42-26 lead.

"He really lit it up from the floor," Cougars coach Lee Morey said. "He did an exceptional job on the floor.

"

Kevin Bissett held Adams to seven points in the fourth quarter and "made him earn every point he got," Morey said.

Girls' basketball CATHOLIC CENTRAL 59, CHRISTIAN LIFE 31: Kaylee Kempken continued her hot shooting to lead four players scoring in double figures in the Lady Toppers' Midwest Classic Conference non-division victory at Burlington.

As a team, Catholic Central (7-1) shot 50 percent from the field in both the first and second halves.

THE HOPE SCHOOL 72, RACINE LUTHERAN 28: Beka Bickel had 13 points for Racine Lutheran in a nonconference loss at Milwaukee.

Sophomore guard LaKendra Washington scored 15 of her 29 points in the first quarter for The Hope School.

Burlington led by a tenth of a point before Essman scored 9.3 and Baumeister a 9.025 to take the top two spots in the floor exercise.
