A scheduling quirk meant La Mirada High's softball team didn't begin its Suburban League season until Wednesday, a full week after the other six teams. It didn't take the Matadores long, however, to find themselves in familiar territory - unbeaten in league. Led by seniors Christina Pedroza, Kandis Jones and Jackie Canas, the defending league champs topped visiting Cerritos 10-0 in five innings, improving their record to 7-1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Suburban League.

Pedroza struck out 12 batters and allowed the Dons just two hits. She also had an RBI double. Jones, a center fielder, and Canas, a catcher, each went 2 for 3 with two RBI.

The same teams play at Cerritos on Friday. Elizabeth Jimenez's RBI fielder's choice capped a three-run eighth inning and kept the Lancers (11-3, 3-0) unbeaten in Suburban League play. Janae Townsend hit a three-run home run for Norwalk in the fourth inning and Andrea Gutierrez earned the victory in relief.
