Boots is takeover target

HIGH street retail group Alliance Boots today confirmed it was the subject of takeover interest.

The company, which has around 3,000 retail outlets, did not identify the interested party or parties, but stressed the approach was "preliminary and highly conditional".

Alliance Boots shares surged 18% as the group became the latest retail chain after Sainsbury's to attract bid interest.



Today's share price rise took the company's market value to more than £9 billion.

The interest comes just eight months after the business was created from a merger of equals between Boots and Alliance UniChem, which owned the Moss retail chain as well as being one of Europe's biggest distributors of healthcare and pharmaceutical products.

The company said in a statement: "Alliance Boots confirms that a preliminary and highly conditional approach regarding a possible offer for the company has been received.
