Otis Richard is running a tiller when Alice and Bobby Pharms park their big pick-up at the Alabama Community Garden gate and begin unloading crates of CDs.
"I've got to have my music when I garden," Alice says, laughing, the sun striking her big gold hoop earrings.
She and Bobby grow vegetables in two of the 56 plots in the Third Ward garden.
A plot for her and one for him (like having separate closets for some) keeps both happy.
"I gave him that garden because I was tired of him trying to tell me what to do in my garden." Alice jokes.
Good food, good humor, friendship and strong sense of community are typical fare at the Alabama garden.
