Pontnack, who scored seven takedowns in his 100th win, had kidney problems his freshman year from trying to cut weight. He now has no need to cut weight and his kidneys no longer bother him.
And a healthy Pontnack has momentum working in his favor.
He has earned several awards at tournaments this season and has moved up to second in the illinoismatmen.com s rankings at 152 pounds.
#8220He puts a lot of work into it, Lena-Winslow coach Kevin Milder said.
#8220He s one of the hardest workers I have on the team. He deserves everything he s been getting so far. Hopefully, we can keep him going.
The Panthers only managed two other wins outside of forfeits against Dakota.
Dakota s Seth Milks (119 pounds), Vinny Alber (130) and Steve Carlson (135) each registered pins for the Indians in the win against Lena-Winslow. Alber (135), Morgin Niedermeier (140), Chris Kraft (145) and Caleb Kraft (171) each won by pinfall in the matchup with West Carroll.
Although the Indians did not dominate the meet as much as they did last season when they beat West Carroll, 69-6, and Lena-Winslow, 67-4 the opposition still spoke highly of the powerhouse Dakota team.
#8220Dakota s unbelievable, they re a great team, Pontnack said. #8220We had a few key matchups that went the wrong way.
That was pretty much the deciding factor.
West Carroll s Nick Law gave the Thunder their first pin of the day. Law trailed his opponent, Dakota s Brandon Houghton, 5-0 in points after the end of the second period.
But with one second remaining in the match, Law pinned Houghton and avoided what would have been a one-point loss.
#8220That was real nice, West Carroll Brady Knop said. #8220He has the tendency to do that late in matches.
We ll definitely take that.
The Thunder s Anthony Houzenga also pinned his Dakota opponent.
In the third dual of the day, Lena-Winslow defeated West Carroll, 43-30, behind three pins and three forfeits.
Kolton Kempel started off the meet with a pin for the Panthers at 140 pounds. T.J.
Reif (103) and Jered Staver (171) also recorded falls for Lena-Winslow.
Phil Cassaday (125), Matthew McIntyre (135) and Cody Young (160) each had pins for West Carroll in the loss.
