When: 7:30 p.m. Saturday Where: Tropicana If disco is the way you like it like it , this show s for you.
KC the Sunshine Band will be at the Tropicana on Saturday. The group became icons of the 1970s with such genre-defining hits as Get Down Tonight, That s the Way I Like It and Shake, Shake, Shake Shake Your Booty. The Sunshine band sold more than 100 million records, received nine Grammy nominations, won three Grammy Awards and an American Music Award and then crashed and burned in the early 80s, only to rise out of the ashes in the 90s to return to the stage.
Only co-founder Harry KC Wayne Casey remains of the original group, and he s not recording, so hits no longer seem to be in the cards. But there s still a lot of fun to be had at a Sunshine concert. Casey recently talked to the Sun about Sunshine and a few cloudy days.
1. On the band disbanding
The original band disbanded in 1980. We just decided to go our own way and do different things.
I went out on my own. 2. Retirement.
Parties. Drugs.
In 1984 I retired.
I partied a lot. It was crazy. All kinds of drugs and pills and booze and stuff.
I had been such a goody two shoes throughout my career I don t know. I went the wrong road. I was very lonely.
It s very lonely at the top. I just wanted to fit in. I did the wrong thing to fit in, I guess.
In 1995 I went into rehab and so I m 11 years clean. 3. Clean and sober and Arsenio Hall
I quit the business because I just didn t want to do it anymore.
Then Arsenio Hall had us come on his TV show in the early 90s and urged me to come out of retirement. After I did the show, I realized this was what I was supposed to be doing. I realized I was kind of missing it.
4. New Sunshine
I did some auditions, got together some people, came back and started doing it again. We ve worked pretty much consistently since then, about 100 shows a year.
Our show is very high energy. There are 15 of us on-stage dancers, singers and myself, a really high-energy show. It s a lot of fun.
We do all the hits, and then some. 5. No more recording
I think about it but get a little nervous.
I m 56. Do I really want to go there with all the pressure and everything that goes with recording? Right now I m just enjoying life and everything is cool.
I m very happy. Jerry Fink can be reached at 259-4058 or at jerry lasvegassun.com.
