Wichita police are asking residents to be on the lookout for stolen jewelry.
A bag of rings, necklaces and other jewelry was stolen shortly before 10 a.m.

Thursday from the trunk of a rental car in the parking lot of the Four Points Hotel at 5805 W. Kellogg, Capt. Darrell Haynes said.

A sales representative from California had placed the jewelry bag in the trunk of the car, closed the lid and climbed into the car. The ignition switch had been altered to prevent the salesman from getting the car key into the ignition, Haynes said, and the salesman noticed the dashboard's "trunk ajar" light was on.
He climbed out to check on the trunk, realized it was open, and spotted a man walking away and getting into a nearby car.

When the salesman approached the other car, he saw three men inside it -- including one who had a gun, Haynes said. The salesman did not press the issue, and the men drove away.
The value of the jewelry is substantial, Haynes said: "We're talking tens of thousands of dollars.

"
The rings are engraved with the initials YCH. Police are hoping to eventually provide additional descriptions of the stolen jewelry.
